Sapphire Crystal

What is a Sapphire Crystal?

Sitting on top of every watch is a piece of crystal(or "glass") that ranges from acrylic hesalite to mineral, and synthetic sapphire is the best watch crystal that money can buy. Made out of pure aluminum oxide at extremely high temperatures, synthetic sapphire crystal is arguably the best and hardest crystal for your watch. Unlike mineral crystals that we tend to see on Timex, Daniel Wellington, and lower-end Seiko watches that are just scratch-resistant but nonetheless scratchable, sapphire crystal is virtually unscratchable in most cases due to the fact that it measures 9 on the Mohs scale; only allowing materials as hard as, if not harder than, itself to scratch it, such as a diamond.

Most people tend to ignore this specification when purchasing a timepiece until scratches inevitably accumulate and taunt them every time they look at the time. This will not be the case if your watch is equipped with a sapphire crystal.
